Eritrean refugee life from Verona to Germany

"I am leaving, i can't live in the streets anymore"
"Isaak, where are you going?"
"For now to Germany. Friends said that i can have a chance at living and working there as  long as i don't show my paper". He might be deported because of the Dublin Treaty that allows all Schengen EU country to send refugees back to the Eu country where they first had they finger prints registered.
Isaak knew that if the German authorities check his finger prints, he would be deported back to Italy, back here in Verona, the city of love, it had no place for him. If you only consider that people are fined up to 500 euro just for giving money to a clochard, it doesn't come as a surprise.

Verona city is admired and visited by thousands of tourists every day, and nobody notices them, the poor ones. The immigrants, the refugees, hanging around the parks. I am not a tourist. I see them, walking by and find myself wondering if I were a tourist would i ever visit a city like this? I know Verona, social and political life, and its leaders position when it comes to immigrants and refugees. The political party in power is a right wing party called LEGA, they are so adverse to immigrants and foreigners, to the Italian government (and no surprise why) that they have been wanting to be a nation of their own.

Tesfu has been in Verona since October.  He is from Segheneyti, a city not too big in Eritrea. He fled the country almost 2 years ago. He has already received the refugee status. The Italian authorities in the area he came in, South of Italy told "Vai, cerca lavoro" (go look for a job). He speak barely 10 words in italian and has no idea how to ask for an application form to apply for a job. So Tesfu too tells me that he will join Isaak in Germany. He has a friend there, who knows if he's careful he can make it. I try to advise him against it, but then i know that Verona has nothing better to offer. I found a pizzaiolo's course, training to bake pizza for free. Such courses cost up to one thousand euro. But Tesfu has given up. He was tired of home shelters and had no more faith.

"speriamo dehan" he say to me on the phone, mixing italian and tigrigna: "lets hope well".
I hope that he will be the last to risk it.  Speriamo the european government takes off
Isaak and Tesfu were my new friends. Who knows where they are now. We keep entouch by chat. I hope they keep it up.
I think of them often and hope that the German authorities are really a bit human towards them. Until EU Parliament will vote to undo the Dublin Treaty on refugees.
There are other 4 Eritrean and 5 Ethiopian refugees here in Verona. There are no social services. They are struggling to stay sane, even if their life situation is hard. Unfortunately Italy at this historic era regarding refugees policies it is not a good place to be in. Thats why they prefer to flee to other European countries.

Verona's major Tosi's second in command is under investigation for corruption and the public housing agency AGEC as well. The Veronese youngsters are leaving the country more and more to other EU nations to look for better life, but fortunately for them they have no entrance permit problems as do the refugees.
